Chapter 588 The Trouble in 1888
The three pickpockets moved around in the crowd. If it weren't for his clairvoyance, Chen Ke might not have been able to keep up with them.
Unlike what he expected, they were not hiding in the Big Ben clock tower, but bypassed it and ran straight to a secluded street.
This street was so cold and out of place in Langdon. The residents on the street were slow, and the carriages on the outer streets never drove in here.
Chen Ke slowed down at the right time, because he noticed that when he stepped into this mysterious community, there were already many eyes around him.
The craftsmen doing handicrafts, the hawkers, and the women washing clothes at the door of their homes, they all looked at Chen Ke secretly. There was no murderous intent, but the vigilant and suspicious eyes made people uncomfortable.
"Stop." A steady female voice came from a room.
Chen Ke stood on the street, and it seemed that the boss here was about to appear.
"It seems that my children have brought back a tail. Who are you? What are you doing here?" the female voice asked.
Chen Ke looked up and saw a group of young men emerging from the roofs on both sides, holding crossbows in their hands and aiming at him.
"I have no ill intentions." Chen Ke said with his hands open.
"Answer the question, stranger." The female voice said again.
"You'd better show up and talk to me, otherwise..." As soon as Chen Ke opened his mouth, three arrows shot into the mud in front of him, only half a step away from him.
"You are not qualified to bargain." The female voice said.
"Your children are pickpockets." Chen Ke said.
"So you are the sheriff? I have already arranged it, don't think about extorting another penny." The female voice was a little impatient.
"No... no... I used to know a man who took in child laborers and orphans in Langdon City. His children were also pickpockets. He should have some eye problems. I spent some money to ask someone to take care of him... I came to find him." Chen Ke said.
The female voice was silent for a while, as if she was brewing something.
"How do you know him?" After a while, the female voice asked again.
"I haven't said his name yet." Chen Ke smiled.
Not far away, the balcony door on the second floor of a two-story building was pushed open, and a white-haired old woman wearing a purple windbreaker and bun-haired came out, with a young woman supporting her.
"You are here to find Jacob, right?" the old woman asked.
"Yes! Then... who are you?" Chen Ke asked back.
"I am his sister, Evie." Evie said.
She looked at the roofs of the buildings on both sides, and the crossbowmen retreated.
"Come in." Evie said, turned and walked into the door.
Chen Ke walked quickly into the two-story building, which was a very clean apartment. Evie slowly went downstairs with the support of the young woman. After seeing Chen Ke, she motioned him to find a place to sit down.
"Make coffee for our guests, Poloz." Evie looked at the woman.
The woman nodded and went to the kitchen to work.
"Evie? Are you Jacob's sister?" Chen Ke confirmed again. The old woman had her hair bunned and her face was as thin as a sharp knife. Although she was old, she must have been a beauty when she was young.
She sat opposite Chen Ke, leaning on a cane, and looked at Chen Ke cautiously.
"Yes, he didn't mention you to me?" Ivy asked.
"You don't seem... surprised at all? I met Jacob 29 years ago..." Chen Ke said. Since Ivy knew Chen Ke, it must be Jacob who said it.
"He told me that someone paid to cure his eyes, and said that he knew a person from the future. So I was prepared for this." Ivy said.
"He knew I would come to him again?" Chen Ke asked.
"I think this should be just his own idea. My brother is such a whimsical man." Ivy smiled.
"Where is he?" Chen Ke got to the point.
"Tell me first, why are you looking for him? What are you here for?" Ivy asked.
"I... I have some things to do here, and I need a place to stay. But something went wrong in the middle, and I came 29 years late... I was supposed to come when you were younger..." Chen Ke said.
"Well, the reason is reasonable, but you still haven't told me what you are here for." Ivy asked.
"I think it's better for you not to know about this matter." Chen Ke said.
"I am different from my brother. Since you want our help, you have to be open and honest." Ivy did not give in.
"The more you know, the more trouble you may have, and your small community may be affected. Is this okay?" Chen Ke asked.
Ivy was silent for a moment, as if she was thinking.
Chen Ke did not speak either, waiting for Ivy to express her opinion.
"Coffee."
Poloz placed two cups in front of Chen Ke and Ivy, then picked up a small iron kettle and poured coffee into the cups. The hot brown-black liquid hit the bottom of the cup and splashed on the blue checkered tablecloth, leaving some ink spots.
"You are really good at talking, little cutie." Ivy smiled.
"I need Jacob... and your help, but I don't want to put you in danger." Chen Ke said.
"I know. Jacob told me that you are such a person. Come, have some coffee." Ivy said, stirring the coffee in the cup with a small silver spoon, and the coffee was steaming.
"Then... where is Jacob? Upstairs? Is his eyes okay?" Chen Ke asked.
Ivy didn't say anything and continued to stir the coffee.
Chen Ke noticed Ivy's anxiety.
"Chen..." The door was pushed open, and a sturdy young man stood at the door.
Chen Ke looked at the young man, who was wearing a white long-sleeved cloth shirt and a brown coat, with a crossbow on his back, a hunter's hat on his head, and a brown beard on his chin.
"Who are you?" Chen Ke had no impression.
"I am Dayage. I aimed at you with a slingshot when you climbed the window. Did you remember?" Dayage smiled.
"Wait a minute... Let me think..." Chen Ke squinted his eyes and recalled. The experience in 1859 passed quickly in his mind like a 6x movie.
I remembered... That night they had just settled the matter between Baron Mox and Lady Catherine. Jacob took himself to the unfinished workers' dormitory and said he wanted to compete in climbing the wall or something...
"Oh my God, Dayage, you are old enough to be my brother now..." Chen Ke exclaimed.
"You are still so young, Chen, it's amazing, isn't it?" Dayage also smiled.
"Where is little Jack? Where is he?" Chen Ke asked with a smile.
Dayage's smile slowly disappeared from his face, turning into a little helplessness. He looked at Evie, not knowing whether to say it or not.
"What happened?" Chen Ke looked at Evie and asked.
"Chen Ke, this is a little hard to say, but Jacob may need your help again." Evie said.
Chen Ke sat up a little straighter.
"Little Jack is missing, and Jacob has been looking for him. He used to come back, but a few months ago, Jacob also disappeared..." Dayage said.
"So, they disappeared? There are your spies all over the street, but you can't find them?" Chen Ke asked.
"If Jacob and Jack don't want to be found by them, then they can't be found. I really want to find them myself, but I'm too old." Evie said.
"You mean, Jacob hid himself?" Chen Ke asked.
"This is my guess. If that's the case, it's better. But if not, it's bad." Evie said.
"Chen, can you help me?" Dayage said.
