Chapter 28 Good Things Should Be Hidden
As the night deepened, Gu Fei fell asleep while reading a book.
Chen had been waiting for Gu Zhang in the main room.
Gu Zhang hurried home in the middle of the night.
"Where did you go, you old man? You didn't even tell me!" Chen scolded.
Gu Zhang waved his hand, "Let's talk about it tomorrow. Tomorrow, my maid and Da Lang and I have to go to the city. Let's rest first."
The old couple and Gu Fei lay on the same kang.
Chen got up at the first crowing of the rooster. She had to make breakfast quickly so that the father and son could eat before going to the city.
When she entered the kitchen, Li Chunhua was already there.
She squatted on the ground with an oil lamp in her hand, in a daze.
Chen followed her gaze and saw two large bags on the ground. The material of the bags was something she had never seen before, and there were words written on them, but Chen was illiterate and didn't know what was written.
She walked over and looked at them in confusion. Just as she was about to cut them open with a knife, Li Chunhua suddenly shouted, "Mom, be careful. I feel like there is food inside."
Food?
Two bags this big?
Chen's eyes lit up, and she carefully untied the string at the mouth of the bag. When she opened it, she saw that it was actually white rice!
Chen and Li Chunhua looked at each other, both of them were stunned.
Another bag was also untied, and it was full of white flour.
Chen reached out and grabbed a handful, white and thin.
After a while, Chen trembled and said, "Chunhua, you can't tell anyone about this except your family."
Li Chunhua nodded vigorously, "Mom, I won't tell anyone."
"You can't even tell your family! Remember!"
"I won't tell anyone, mom, don't worry, I know the severity of the matter." Li Chunhua grabbed Chen's hand, "Mom, I think this must be a fairy who saw that we had no food to eat and gave it to us, don't you think?"
Chen nodded, "Isn't it? Xiaocao said it was a fairy."
The two of them knew tacitly that these things, like the fruit last night, were inseparable from Gu Fei.
Chen looked around and said, "We have to hide it."
Li Chunhua suggested, "Mom, I'm afraid you have to hide it in the room. This kitchen can be entered by anyone."
"Yes, yes, hide the flour in your room and the rice in our room."
The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law hid the flour and rice with great effort, and scooped a large bowl of flour to make breakfast.
Back in the kitchen, Li Chunhua called out again, "Mom, look what this is?"
There was a transparent bag on the chopping board, and the things inside were white.
"Is this - salt?" Chen opened the bag, dipped a little with her finger and put it in her mouth.
So sweet!
"Chunhua, it's sugar, try it!"
Li Chunhua also dipped some and put it in her mouth. It was really sugar.
"Why is this sugar so white?"
At that time, the sugar eaten by every household was brown sugar. White sugar was already available, but it was expensive, and ordinary people were reluctant to eat it.
Chen hesitated for a moment, "Bring a few eggs, make egg pancakes in the morning, add some sugar."
Li quickly took the eggs and started to knead the dough.
Gu Fei got up, and there was no one in the room.
She shivered as she took off her clothes and changed into the apricot yellow and emerald green jacket and skirt her father bought for her. But she couldn't do anything about her hair. It was painful for her to comb her hair herself.
After changing her clothes, Gu Fei took toothpaste and toothbrush from the space, let her hair down and went to the kitchen to fetch water.
Now it's dry, the water in the well is almost dry, and only one or two buckets of muddy water can be fetched a day.
Li Chunhua saw her come in and hurriedly said, "Sister, do you want to fetch water to wash your face? Don't move, sister-in-law will fetch it for you."
"Thank you, sister-in-law." Gu Fei smiled sweetly, and she smelled the fragrance of the pancakes.
