Chapter 2060: Knight's Night of Terror (Part 4)
The rain was getting heavier.
The thick black clouds were like the lid of a boiling pot, with steam rising up and dripping down as it cooled, as cold as the sea water under the glacier and as hot as molten lava rushing straight into the sky.
The rain was so heavy that it completely blocked the view. The two towering bridge pillars of the Gotham Bridge were like the raised arms of a giant. The huge noise made by the rotors of the armed helicopter cutting through the rain almost completely blocked the conversation in the cabin.
"Damn it, this place always has this kind of weather. If I had known, I would have pretended to be sick tonight." The helicopter pilot adjusted his eyepiece impatiently and said, "Support Gotham? Don't be ridiculous! I think we should find a sheltered place to stay for a while, and then go back and say that the mission is completed. Anyway, there is nothing to save in this city."
"Don't be stupid, Hank, we are here to get something. If this city is not too dangerous, would we need an armed helicopter? The weather is getting worse and worse. Let's try to access the Wayne Group's radio channel and ask them to find a place for us to land."
The helicopter pilot looked down through the window, but the rain was too heavy and he couldn't see anything clearly. He had to look up again, and then he saw a pair of lonely ghost eyes in the deep rain.
"God! What is that?!!"
Hearing the driver's exclamation, the two companions behind him immediately rushed up and looked forward.
"Damn, am I hallucinating? That looks like a car? And it's flying in the sky?!"
"Wait! What's on its tail? Why is it on fire?... Damn, it's a missile! It's a missile! Get out of the way!! Get out of the way!!!"
Zila la--
"What's going on?" Barbara shook the wheelchair hard, took off the headphones on her head and threw them on the stool, then turned to look out the window.
"Why are the FBI helicopters here?! The Batmobile fired at them?! What on earth is going on?!!"
"There must be trouble in the city." Robin also walked around the table as fast as possible, walked to the window and said, "Something happened that we didn't expect."
He took the weapon from his waist, looked at Barbara and said, "It's not suitable for you to go out in this situation. Stay here. I'll go out to find clues. If there is any situation, I will contact you through the usual communication channel."
"Wait." Barbara grabbed Robin's sleeve and said, "Take this."
She stuffed a communicator into Robin's hand, took a deep breath, and casually glanced at the group photo on the table, and said, "You know that such a big thing has happened. He can't just sit there and watch. Blüdhaven is not far from here. You know what I mean."
Robin squeezed the communicator hard, and then said, "Yes, of course I understand, but he also has his own things to do. I will give you news soon."
Barbara sat in front of the window, watching Robin jump to the building opposite with a grappling hook and disappear in the gradually hazy lead gray of the rain curtain.
Barbara closed her eyes and exhaled, tightening her jacket to make herself feel warmer. Before she rocked her wheelchair back to the computer with some effort, she thought she could still do something.
After tapping a few times on the keyboard, she accessed the internal communication of the Gotham Police Department. The expected busy conversation did not appear. Barbara switched several channels before hearing a desperate cry.
"We are finished! Gotham is finished!... All dead, they are all dead, I will die too, God, save us..."
Barbara froze, she stared at the screen, confirming that the line she cut was correct, she pressed hard on her forehead with the hand that was not holding the mouse, grabbed the hair on her forehead and pulled it back, and finally let go and put it on the keyboard.
With trembling fingertips, she pressed the button on the keyboard again, and she accessed the channel of her father, James Gordon.
"Listen, this is James Gordon. This is the message I left in the vault of Citibank in Gotham. We had to retreat here in order to leave enough clues for those who come to investigate."
"The oxygen in the vault is only enough to support 30 minutes, and there is a big problem with the air in Gotham. In just ten minutes, all the residents of Gotham who had not yet evacuated fell down."
"No one knows whether they are dead or what, but please listen to me now. If you can't avenge us, at least you can make the truth public."
"About three hours ago, the superman who escaped from Arkham Asylum "The top criminal Scarecrow claimed that he had planted more than a thousand terror gas bombs in Gotham City."
"He threatened everyone in the city, especially Batman, that if we failed to take timely measures, the city would be destroyed in 24 hours."
"But it is obvious that he is not only a lunatic, but also a liar. He took action within just three hours. Just a few minutes ago, we watched our colleagues fall one after another."
"This is hell. I repeat, Gotham has become a purgatory on earth. If you finally hear my message, please warn everyone that the end of the world is coming."
"If you are powerless to save the situation, please at least hold on until the next morning. Please don't feel sad for the sacrifice of your loved ones. At least we are still here to guard the night and then meet again in hell."
Beep-beep-beep-
Click!
The earphones slipped from her trembling fingertips. Barbara took a breath in disbelief, and tears could not be restrained from pouring out of her eyes.
She suddenly turned her head to look at the wall clock behind her, and then hurriedly tapped the keyboard to check the time when this message was sent - 12 minutes ago.
"There is still time! There is still time!"
Barbara frantically fumbled for the communicator on her body, but remembered that the mobile phone with the special number had been given to Robin. She pulled her hair on her forehead with her fingers and pursed her lips tightly.
Suddenly, as if she had thought of something, she answered the call again and said, "Hello? Hello? Peter, Peter! Are you there? Go, go to the Citibank vault opposite the Gotham Police Department. A group of police officers are trapped there and their oxygen is running out!"
There was a strange silence on the other end of the communicator.
"Hello... Hello?!!"
"Who are you looking for?"
A low and hoarse voice came from the other end. Barbara was stunned. She immediately grabbed the microphone on the headset and said, "Who are you, where is Peter Parker? Answer me!"
"Batman's new assistant is here. If you want to save him, tell Batman all this."
"What?! You..."
Beep-beep-beep--
Bang!
Barbara looked at the headset that was thrown on the ground in anger, and then her arms fell down weakly, closed her eyes, and the muscles in her neck kept twitching.
She bent down with some effort, picked up the headset, pressed the familiar button, and said to the other end.
"Batman! Please, calm down, or you will lose everything, or we will lose everything."
"James is dying, the kid named Parker has been kidnapped, I don't know where Robin is, I don't know where Nightwing is."
"Tell me, Batman, how are we going to spend this night, how are we going to..."
Barbara's voice gradually faded away, and Batman's pale face was illuminated by the fire from the missile muzzle on the side of the Batmobile.
Across the dark rain curtain, he saw the face of the Joker behind the helicopter cockpit.
"That's it, Batman, end it all, let the nightmare end this night, you should rest."
Batman slowly closed his eyes, but just as the slack and empty emotions surged from his heart, he released his hand pressing the missile launcher button and pressed the communication button with a resolute gesture.
"Listen, people in front, I'm Batman. Land on the nearest rooftop immediately and disarm yourself, otherwise I will open fire immediately. Repeat..."
On the top floor of Wayne Tower, Gotham Weather Control Center, Peter stood in front of the control panel, and Poison Ivy looked back at the man who fell behind him, and then looked back at Peter.
Poison Ivy felt that the man who had just been knocked down by Peter should be at least twice as heavy as her, and he was wearing a black and gray metal armor that looked a bit like Batman, looking strong and advanced in the same vein.
But just a few minutes ago, Peter knocked this man down with one move through her - even before this uninvited guest landed, the shining filament had already flown out.
"What are you going to do?" Watching Peter walk towards the man, Poison Ivy's Adam's apple moved.
Peter didn't reply, but just walked straight to the man lying on the ground. Poison Ivy looked closely and found that the man was not dead, and his chest was still rising and falling. She guessed that he might have been strangled by the mysterious filament shot by Peter.
Peter half-knelt beside the man, raised his head and looked at Poison Ivy opposite him and said, "We have to find a way to get out. You don't think Batman will let us go after we have caused such a big disaster, right?"
Poison Ivy was choked. She stared at Peter blankly and said, "You dare to do it even though you know it won't happen?!"
"That's because I am sure I can get out." Peter fumbled on the man's armor and said, "It doesn't matter how a shocking plan was thought up and executed. The most important thing is how to run away after executing the plan and causing a huge disaster. This is what the doctor repeatedly emphasized."
"Now we have to run quickly. If we are late, we will definitely not be able to escape from this beating. Come and help, turn him over."
Poison Ivy finally walked over and turned the man over with Peter. At the moment when she took off the mask, her expression changed slightly.
The face was younger than expected, and more importantly, there was a capital letter "J" on the cheek.
"What are you going to do with him?" Poison Ivy's tone was a little hesitant. She took a deep breath and pursed her lips and said, "Well, Batman saved me, so I have to repay him."
"Listen, this guy should be Batman's former assistant, but I don't know why he disappeared and is back now. I advise you not to kill him, otherwise it will not be as simple as getting beaten up."
"You're wrong, I don't intend to kill him." Peter knelt on the ground with both knees, shook his head and said, "I don't kill people."
"You didn't trick Batman with this trick, did you?" Poison Ivy gritted her teeth and said, "You damn bastard, you dragged me into the pirate ship. If you dare to run without me, I will let Harley smash your head into pieces!"
"Stop talking nonsense, hold his body steady."
Peter put one hand on the man's chest armor, Poison Ivy straightened his head, and then the scene that almost scared Poison Ivy to sit on the ground appeared.
Red mucus began to flow out of Peter's arm, spreading all the way along his chest. A mass of sticky liquid first wrapped the man's face, then flowed into his mouth and nose, and disappeared almost instantly.
Then, the man suddenly opened his eyes, and there was no pupil or white in his eyes, only a blood color.
His limbs twitched, and he stood up shakily like a zombie, and returned to normal within a few seconds.
At the same time, Peter's communicator rang, and Barbara's anxious voice came from the other side.
"Hello? Hello? Peter! Peter! Are you there?! Quick! Go! Go to the Citibank vault opposite the Gotham Police Department..."
A hand covered with black gauntlet took the phone, and a low and hoarse voice sounded in the communicator.
"Who are you looking for?"
