Chapter 44 Military Region Officials
The CIA-planned plan for MiG-25 pilot Belenko to defect ultimately failed due to Andrei's intervention. The MiG-25 crashed into the seabed hundreds of nautical miles away from Hokkaido.
Although the United States did not succeed in obtaining the defected MiG-25, it was still there after all! Now, as long as the aircraft is salvaged, the United States can still study the structure of the MiG-25!
So, at the meeting, when Locke, the head of the CIA's Far East, proposed this plan, Lieutenant General Paul immediately nodded in agreement, and he also stated that action must be quick!
Although we know the approximate location where the MiG-25 crashed on the seabed, if we want to salvage it, we must find the crash site accurately. After all, the average depth of the Sea of Japan is almost two thousand meters, and ordinary divers cannot dive to this depth.
Therefore, the United States mobilized two oceanographic survey ships to start searching near the crash site. These two oceanographic survey ships were equipped with advanced surveying equipment that could map the geological features of the seabed and also find the MiG-25 that had sunk to the bottom of the sea.
At the same time, the salvage ship is on standby nearby, and once the sinking location is found, salvage will be carried out immediately!
The Soviets probably didn't expect that this 100 nautical miles was equivalent to giving the MiG-25 to their own side!
The survey ship continuously emits ultrasonic waves to detect the seabed, and computer-generated images are displayed on the screen of the survey ship. As long as the outline of the MiG-25 is found, deep-sea divers will be sent down to observe and confirm.
This work is long and boring, and most of the time it depends on luck. The people on the measuring ship are all exhausted after several hours of work.
At this moment, a roar was heard in the distant sky. A sailor on the deck looked at the eastern sky and saw four fighter planes roaring towards them.
F-4! At this time, why did our air force go out?
"Altitude 28,000, speed 2.8. Damn it, at this speed and altitude, we can't intercept it at all!" After the long-range radar discovered the Soviet Union's movements, the U.S. Air Force urgently dispatched four fighter jets to prepare for interception.
However, facing those fighter planes flying at high altitude and speed, the pilots of the F-4 fighter planes were helpless. They couldn't reach the height and were not as fast as them, so there was no way they could intercept them.
Twenty-eight thousand is already the height of the stratosphere. The air here is thin and you can see the wonderful scenery at the edge of the earth. Every time he flies to this height, Andre would marvel at the charm of the earth.
This time, flying his own fighter No. 032 and escorting a MiG-25R reconnaissance plane from a brother unit, the two planes flew from high altitude towards the designated sea area.
After crossing the median line of the Sea of Japan, both planes had climbed to an altitude of 28,000 meters, with afterburners at maximum, flying at a speed of Mach 2.8.
Turning on the radar, Andre saw four bright spots. He said to the pilot of the reconnaissance plane on the radio: "032 calling 462, 032 calling 462, four American fighter planes spotted, at an altitude of 16,000 and a speed of 1.5. They are not a threat."
Due to its outstanding high-altitude and high-speed performance, the reconnaissance type of the MiG-25 interceptor was developed after it entered service. This high-altitude and high-speed aircraft was simply born for reconnaissance, so much so that in the end, 60% of the total production of MiG-25s were reconnaissance/bomber types.
Initially, the Mikoyan Design Bureau equipped the MiG-25 with five Zenit aerial reconnaissance cameras produced by the Kazan Zenit Optical Instrument Factory, including four A70M side reconnaissance cameras and one A/E-10 terrain reconnaissance camera. After entering service, it became the most advanced reconnaissance aircraft in the Soviet Union.
However, a pure reconnaissance aircraft was a bit wasteful, so the Mikoyan Design Bureau continued to add bombing aiming systems to these production MiG-25Rs, expanded the air intake cross-sectional area, increased the ceiling, and adopted two newer A-72 cameras with 150MM lenses to replace the A-70M and A/E-10 cameras, and optional SRS-4A/B/V electronic reconnaissance equipment and SPS-141 "Alert" electronic countermeasure jammers. It developed into the MiG-25RB reconnaissance bomber.
Now, flying with Andre is such a plane. The mission of the two planes is to conduct reconnaissance and photography of the Americans' maritime operations.
After noticing the two planes coming, the Americans immediately took off to intercept them. Unfortunately, faced with two planes flying at high altitude, the Americans had no way to intercept them.
They roared past from high in the sky. Although they began taking pictures and returning after finding the American salvage ship below, they still almost brushed the edge of Hokkaido before completing this turn. The two planes roared back to the base.
The reconnaissance photos were sent for development, and Andrei, who had just changed out of his flight suit, was called to Kozhedub's office.
"Report." Andre shouted, heard the echo from inside, pushed open the door and walked in.
After entering, Andrei saw that in addition to the base commander Kozhedub and the regiment commander Ivanov, there were two unfamiliar people. Both of them looked to be around fifty years old, with wrinkles on their faces, but they were still in good spirits.
Looking again, Andre glanced at the shoulder of one of them. He was stunned by the yellow pattern and the three stars on it. This guy is a general.
The other one was wearing an air defense force uniform and had the rank of lieutenant general on his shoulders.
No wonder Kozhedub was like that today, smiling as meanly as if he had seen that KGB guy, it turned out that the big boss was here!
"Captain Andrei, pilot of the 513th Regiment of the Soviet Air Defense Force, comes here to report." Andrei said to the person in front of him.
"Captain Andrei, this is General Ivan Trechiyanko, the commander of our Far Eastern Military District, and this is Lieutenant General Konstantin Burman, the deputy commander of the Far Eastern Military District and the commander-in-chief of the Far Eastern Military District Air Defense Force." Kozhedub said, "Today is the most glorious day for our Sokolovka base, as we have the inspection of these two officers."
It turned out to be a senior military official!
