Chapter 147 Rainy Night Mystery (Part 1)
In the quiet manor, the flames of the fireplace crackled, and the drizzle hit the glass. The slight sound disappeared in the dim light when it entered the room.
The sound of turning pages was heard softly. Schiller leaned on the sofa in front of the fireplace to read a book. In this slow-paced era, the time from sunset to bedtime always seemed very long. Schiller held the book, and the world in front of him swayed on the words and began to blur gradually. Just as he was getting sleepy, a rapid phone ring woke him up.
Schiller sat there and closed his eyes, took off his glasses, rubbed his eyes, then stood up slowly, walked to the stairs, picked up the telephone receiver on the cabinet and put it to his ear.
"Fish Mooney is dead."
Gordon's voice sounded like thunder on the other end of the phone.
Schiller covered his forehead, leaned against the cabinet and said, "Who is that?"
"The boss of the Mooney Gang, the ruler of the living hell."
"So?"
"... I need your help, professor."
Schiller glanced at the completely dark sky. He was about to refuse, but Gordon said, "It was the crime scene discovered by Batman. When we went there, Fish was already dead. After recording, we brought Fish's body back for autopsy. We also brought back a witness. The witness's mental state was not very good. He might have some mental illness. We really need your help."
Schiller put down the phone, sighed, put on his coat, took his umbrella, left the warm and quiet manor, and walked into the dark rainy night of Gotham.
When he arrived at the door of the police station, there was only a small light bulb in front of the old police station, hanging on the top of the porch at the entrance. Through the light, you can see the rain lines floating in.
Schiller walked up the steps with a lot of water on them. He looked up and saw Gordon struggling to open the wooden door with an iron chain.
Schiller put away his umbrella. Gordon walked over and said, "Thank God, you came just in time."
"Next time there's an emergency like this..." Schiller shook the umbrella hard, as if to vent his anger, and said, "Don't call me. Let's talk tomorrow morning."
Gordon followed his movements. He looked at the umbrella, tilted his head and took a closer look at it, then said, "Why is your umbrella broken? Didn't you say it was of good quality before?"
"Yes, but even the best quality things will break, and there's no place to repair them."
Schiller put away the umbrella and walked straight into the police station. Gordon followed him and said, "The guy in tights ran to the living hell in the middle of the night and happened to run into a murder case."
Gordon took two quick steps and came to Schiller to lead the way. He said quickly, "Fish Mooney was the gangster boss who originally ruled the living hell. Since the transformation of the living hell, many other gangster bosses in the East District have gradually entered there and divided up the territory of the Mooney gang."
"Fish has a bad temper and seems to be a Sadism."
"Now that she's dead, you don't have to describe her symptoms to me. Talk about the living. Where's the witness?"
"I was just about to take you to..." Gordon took Schiller through a whole corridor, and then stopped at the room at the end. A young police officer just came out of there. He said to Gordon: "That kid seems to have some mental problems. I swear I didn't hit him, but he..."
"Okay, okay." Gordon patted the young police officer on the shoulder and said to him: "I trust you. You are not such a violent person. Let's go in and take a look."
After opening the door, Gordon walked in first. As soon as Schiller entered the door, he saw a familiar figure sitting behind the interrogation table. It was Oswald Cobblepot.
He looked very bad now. His face was pale, his black hair was wet by the rain and stuck tightly to his forehead. The eyes deep under his eye sockets were a little dull and lifeless, his limbs were twitching, and he was still mumbling.
He didn't sit on the chair, but squatted in the corner of the room. The young police officer also came in and introduced to Gordon: "We asked him to sit on the chair, but he didn't sit. We didn't handcuff him, and we didn't treat him violently. He was like this when he came in..."
Gordon understood why the young police officer repeatedly emphasized that no violence was used. In a place like the Gotham Police Department, most police officers are not so friendly to prisoners, and it is normal to be beaten after being caught.
Gordon had specifically instructed not to use violence against Cobblepot before. Seeing Cobblepot like this, the young police officer was afraid that Gordon would misunderstand.
Gordon used the key to open the iron door behind the interrogation table. When he walked in, Cobblepot looked very scared. Schiller stopped Gordon from approaching and said, "It seems that he should have stress disorder. Don't get close to him..."
Schiller and Gordon stood two meters away from Cobblepot. Schiller tilted his head and glanced at Cobblepot from the backlight. He found that Cobblepot should be in the stage of onset.
Gordon observed him from another angle. He said to the young policeman: "Did you really not hit him? Why do I see a wound on his neck?"
The policeman raised his hand and said: "I swear, we didn't even touch him! As for the wound, it should have been there before coming here."
The policeman said it very confidently. Gordon frowned. Schiller turned to Gordon and said: "Let him go out first. Too many people are not conducive to his calming down."
After the young policeman went out, Schiller said to Gordon: "This should be acute stress disorder."
Schiller took a half step forward, and Cobblepot immediately hid back like crazy, screaming incomprehensible words. Schiller stepped back and said to Gordon: "Experience the symptoms again, panic, vigilance, and..."
Schiller stroked his chin and said: "More than that, accompanied by the state of excitement, there seem to be some other mental disorders..."
"Well, it seems that it is unlikely that we can ask him anything. "
"That's not necessarily the case, but his symptoms require hospitalization. After treatment, he should be able to recover his normal mind."
"How long will it take?"
"Are you in a hurry?" Schiller asked Gordon, "Although Fish Mooney is a gangster boss, he can't get a number in Gotham. Who puts so much pressure on you?"
Gordon sighed and said, "This matter is very complicated. Let Batman talk about it."
As soon as he finished speaking, there was a noise behind him, and Batman appeared in the shadows in the corner of the interrogation room.
"Let me make it clear first, I know you suspect I beat him, but I didn't do it." Batman said.
"Aren't the injuries on his body left when you subdued him?" Schiller turned his head and asked him.
Batman shook his head and said, "When I met him at the crime scene, he was unconscious and covered with injuries. Obviously, he had just been beaten. "
Batman also walked into the iron gate and stood at a farther place, looking at Cobblepot and said: "When I arrived at the scene, Fish was already dead, and he fainted on the side, with traces of beating all over his body. There was no third party at the scene, so I could only call Gordon to investigate, and then send Fish's body here with him."
"I think you should tell me about this from the beginning." Schiller and the two walked out. Gordon looked back as he walked. He seemed to sympathize with Cobblepot. He said: "Are we just leaving him here? Is this not okay? Otherwise, let's send him to the hospital first?"
"It's best not to let anyone get close to him for the time being, otherwise it will be easier to stimulate him." Schiller said without looking back, but Gordon was still a little worried. He said: "This child doesn't look like an adult yet. He should have a family, right? If he doesn't go home so late, his relatives should be very worried about him. "
As he said that, he called out twice, called back the young policeman who was smoking at the stairs, and said to him: "Go check where this kid lives, who else is at home, and report to his family that he is safe. By the way, don't say he is sick, just say he was injured while racing on the street and is now in the hospital..."
"Don't use the excuse of racing." Schiller reminded Gordon, and he said to Gordon: "I know him, he is a student of the Living Hell Vocational School, his mother should be at home, and he doesn't race."
"Then what? Forget it, or say he was drunk or high."
"He doesn't have any bad habits, doesn't drink or take drugs, doesn't race or fight, and doesn't even smoke."
Gordon's eyes widened, he looked back at Cobblepot, then at Schiller, and said in surprise: "No smoking, no drinking, no drugs, no racing, no fighting? No bad habits? Are you sure he is a child from Gotham? It's really strange..." Gordon put his hands on his hips and said in confusion: "So there really is such a person in Gotham? This is the first time I have seen him in these years here." After saying that, he sympathized with Cobblepot even more. He stood at the door and looked at him repeatedly. Schiller said to Gordon: "I remember that when I came to the police station last time, I saw a lady in charge of cleaning. You ask her to come over. A lady who is close to his mother's age should make him less vigilant." "Are you talking about Mrs. Mona? Well, she should not have left yet. I will arrange for her to come over and at least change clothes for this kid." After the three left, they went to Gordon's office. Gordon and Schiller sat down face to face, and Batman stood in the shadow of the window. Schiller poured himself a cup of hot water and said, "I think you should start from the beginning. What is going on?" He turned to look at Batman and said, "Why did you go to the living hell?" Then he turned back and looked at Gordon and said, "What happened to Fish's death? Why are you so anxious to investigate this case? "
Gordon was the first to speak. He sighed and said, "Let me first tell you what I know. This has to start with the transformation of the living hell area..."
"We all know that the transformed living hell is like a delicious pie, and everyone wants to have a piece of it. Although Munibang used to be rampant in the living hell, there are many troublemakers in the East District. There are several powerful people on Elizabeth Street alone. They are not far from the living hell. If you want to get close to the water, you can get the moon first..."
"As the original owner of the living hell, the Muni Gang wants to defend this area, but they also know that they can't do it alone."
"So, Fish gave up some of his interests to those foreign gang bosses and allowed them to occupy some territories in the North District, but these gang bosses are greedy crocodiles that can never be fed. They forced Fish step by step. As a result, the entire North District and half of the South District were occupied by outsiders. Fish was almost mad..."
