Chapter 126 Air-Cooled Liquid-Cooled

PS: In this chapter, the hero of East China has fallen ill again. I originally planned to introduce it a little, but it came out in one chapter. Alas, this is not good for old military fans. If you find it boring, please ignore this chapter.

Air-cooling and liquid-cooling are the different forms of engine cooling. As the name suggests, air-cooling uses air cooling, while liquid-cooling uses coolant, which is now generally water.

The original engines, which were all air-cooled, had some advantages.

For example, it is light in weight. Compared with liquid cooling, there is less water jacket and less cooling water tank. As long as the cooling fins are arranged outside the cylinder, the weight is much lighter than that of liquid cooling.

At the same time, because the liquid cooling system is omitted, the whole engine has lost a troublesome thing, and the overall reliability has been improved.

At the same time, in the air battle, the opponent killed the cooling water tank with one shot, then the liquid-cooled engine was scrapped, and the cylinders of the air-cooled engine were scattered on a circumferential plane, which reduced the possibility of being caught in one pot.

However, the current mainstream is liquid cooling, because air cooling has some congenital defects.

The first and biggest flaw is the cross-sectional area.

The plane is to fly. The larger the windward area, the greater the air resistance. The liquid-cooled engine has a small cross-sectional area, while the air-cooled engine needs to arrange multiple cylinders in a plane, and the cross-sectional area is large. , resulting in an increase in the air resistance of the entire aircraft.

At the same time, the arrangement of air-cooled aeroengines will cause more obvious and severe vibrations than liquid-cooled aircrafts, and such vibrations will undoubtedly affect the aircraft.

Moreover, since the air-cooled engine uses heat sinks or directly exposes the components to the air for cooling, it is impossible to increase the heat sinks indefinitely, so in terms of heat dissipation, the air-cooled ones are worse.

In the history of aircraft research and development, air-cooled engines often have headaches for heat dissipation, and the engine may catch fire, but liquid-cooled engines do not have this concern.

In fact, there is no conclusion whether liquid cooling is better or air cooling is better. During World War II, many ace fighters were born, including air cooling and liquid cooling.

For example, the Nakajima "Rong" 21 radial air-cooled piston engine of Zero War and the R1830 radial air-cooled piston engine of Mao are the pinnacle of air cooling.

The "Merlin" 12V liquid-cooled piston engine of Spitfire I, the DB601 liquid-cooled piston engine of BF109, the Allison V1710-33 liquid-cooled piston engine of 40, the Mikulin AM-35 liquid-cooled piston engine of IL-2, Both are excellent liquid-cooled engines.

No matter whether it is air-cooled or liquid-cooled, as long as it can win, it is a good plane!

From the actual point of view in Germany, although the DB601 is already very good, the output is limited, and now Goering has put on a posture, obviously even if he quarrels, he will never give it.

Simply, start over!

At the same time, from Cyric's point of view, the navy, using air-cooled engines, would be more appropriate. For example, if you look at the United States on the other side of the ocean, you will know that the US Army Air Forces use liquid-cooled engines, while the Navy is all air-cooled.

Why? Maintenance is troublesome, and the anti-strike ability is poor!

Liquid-cooled engines have coolant. If the weather is cold, when starting the engine, you need to add boiling water in advance to warm up the engine. Once water leaks, it will be even more of a headache. Therefore, in cold areas, liquid-cooled engines are Difficult to serve.

When Germany invaded the Soviet Union, the dispatch efficiency of the BF109 was less than a quarter of that of the FW190, which is why.

And the air-cooling is not so troublesome, and it can be directly ignited at any time! On the aircraft carrier, far from the mainland, there is not much fresh water on the warship. If you have to prepare it for the aircraft, it will be even more nightmare.

Moreover, the air-cooled has strong anti-strike ability. In the battle, once a cylinder is hit, it may still fly back, and the liquid-cooled one has to parachute.

On land, skydiving and ground follow-up, and at sea, jumping into the sea is similar to suicide.

Although the air-cooled windward area is large, it can be alleviated by making up for it with superb design. In this regard, Cyric trusts Fokker-Wulff quite a bit.

Because, this is what happened in history, and the final FW190 is even more advanced than the BF109!

Historically, Germany has looked at the world and found that it is quite dangerous to have only one BF109 to dominate the world.

Because other air force powers have at least two modern fighter jets that are about to be put into service, Germany has put forward technical specifications for new fighter jets for 37 years in history.

In the spring of 1938, these technical specifications were sent to major manufacturers, hoping that among them, advanced fighters would be born.

According to the plan, Fokker designed a compact fighter driven by a star-shaped air-cooled engine.

However, at that time, the German executives were all supporters of in-line water-cooled engines and did not approve of Fokker's new fighter plan. Therefore, this plan did not enter Goering's eyes at all.

But then, the development of He100 and He112, which Göring had high hopes for, failed. At the same time, although Junkers in Dessau and Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart were at full capacity, they could not provide them in the short term. Sufficient number of liquid-cooled engines required for aircraft production.

This resulted in Heinkel having to scale back and eventually discontinue production of the He111P bomber powered by the DB601 engine, focusing instead on the production of the He111H powered by Junkers' Jumo211 engine.

As a result, just like the BF109's dark and bright, the FW190 finally re-entered the eyes of the Luftwaffe.

And the Fokker company is also very competitive. This kind of aircraft was finally successfully developed, and it is even better than BF109!

As for the problem of the large windward area, the designer has also cleverly solved it. The engine cooling air intake is designed in the engine cover and covered with a special ducted propeller hub fairing. This design not only increases the The cooling air flow is reduced, and the air resistance is reduced.

And now, because of Cyric's crossing, history has changed again. This fighter plane, which almost died in history, will enter active service earlier!

"I suggest that the Navy raise its own funds, select a manufacturer, and use BMW's air-cooled engine to develop a carrier-based aircraft suitable for the Navy." Cyric said: "My personal suggestion is to ask Fokker. To design, the most basic indicator is to surpass BF109 in an all-round way.”

Goering opened his mouth wide. Although he didn't say it, his eyes still betrayed him. That way, he was clearly saying, Cyric, are you bragging?
