Chapter 10: Apology
Robinson is a good and responsible doctor. He comes to see Deng Wenyao on time every day and pays attention to Deng Wenyao's injuries.
Liang Yao can see that Dr. Robinson is not doing it for show. He is very responsible for every patient.
"Hello, Dr. Robinson, please have some tea."
Deng Ying held a cup of freshly brewed hot tea and greeted Robinson in the simple English she had just learned.
Dr. Robinson returned a warm smile, thanked Deng Ying, and said that their tea was delicious. He tentatively asked if he could sell him some tea.
Deng Ying had just learned English for a few days and did not understand what Dr. Robinson said. She was stunned and pulled her sleeves, at a loss.
"Give Dr. Robinson two packs of good tea."
Liang Yao said to Deng Ying. After hearing this, Deng Ying quickly brought two better tea bricks like a rabbit.
"Mr. Deng's injury has almost healed." Robinson said while packing up the medicine box, "The bandits nearby have become more and more rampant in the past few days. In just one week, 18 people died at the hands of these bandits."
"These bandits are really hateful. We should strengthen our vigilance." Liang Yao agreed with this.
"That's one aspect, but our strength is too weak. Not to mention the ordinary bandits, there are more than 40 or even more deserters in that group. They are not ordinary bandits, but professional soldiers who have participated in the war. Sacramento is the largest gold mining area nearby. I think they will soon set their sights on this place." Doctor Robinson's words have a hidden meaning.
"Doctor Robinson, just say what you want to say, no need to beat around the bush, I'm all ears." Liang Yao heard the hidden meaning in Robinson's words.
"I heard that you have a good relationship with Sheriff Flagg. Can you visit Sheriff Flagg and let the California Mounted Police enter Sacramento to maintain law and order?" Doctor Robinson expressed his thoughts.
He has sent gold to Flagg several times before and after, how can the relationship be bad?
Liang Yao smiled and said, "Dr. Robinson and Sheriff Flagg have a good relationship."
Robinson smiled bitterly and shook his head: "Sheriff Flagg only respects my medical skills, not me. He is a person who will not get up early without profit. Our Boston company has not found much gold these days, and even the livelihood of our team has become a big problem."
Robinson looked at the Deng brothers with envy as they took out the wet felt collection pads from the bottom of the washing tank and easily collected the fine gold particles from the collection pads.
He had to admit that the entire Boston company team underestimated these wise Orientals. They have successfully found a large amount of gold, and many members of the Boston company still pin their hopes on the so-called high-tech gold washing machine.
Robinson has realized that the so-called high-tech gold washing machine may be just a lie. The salesperson exaggerated its role, and the engineers who designed it were either trying to cheat money or knew nothing about gold mining.
Seeing Liang Yao silent, Robinson did not continue to delve into this issue. Liang Yao was just a gold digger like them, and had no obligation to provide security services for Sacramento.
"Can I have our engineers come over and learn from you how to make and use this tool?" Robinson pointed to their ore washing trough and asked.
He realized that if they wanted to find gold, they had to give up the high-tech gold washing machine and learn gold panning skills from these smart Orientals.
Perhaps the rumors about the ignorance and barbarity of that distant Eastern country were just a lie. The hypocritical British liked to make up lies that were beneficial to them to show the rationality of their aggressive behavior.
The same is true for the United States. In the recent Mexican-American War, Robinson also believed that the United States was the unjust party.
"Of course, in this case, I won't owe you a favor. I can give the drawings to your engineers, but the Boston Company must apologize to me and my compatriots and admit that your gold panning technology is not as good as ours."
The news about gold panning technology in the gold mining area spread very quickly, and the ore washing trough was not a high-tech thing. Liang Yao couldn't hide it even if he wanted to, so he might as well do a favor and give it to Robinson. Liang Yao is already preparing to upgrade his gold mining technology, and he does not intend to only use the low-threshold technology of washing troughs for gold mining.
"I apologize to you for the rude behavior and reckless language of the Boston Company members." Dr. Robinson apologized to Liang Yao very sincerely.
Liang Yao shook his head: "As far as I know, it was not Mr. Robinson who spoke rudely that day. Mr. Robinson does not have to pay for the wrong words and deeds of others."
"I understand, please wait."
Robinson said goodbye to Liang Yao first, and soon, Captain Weber of the Boston Company came to Liang Yao's camp with their engineers and several core members.
There was no previous contempt and arrogance on their faces. They had to admit that these Orientals were much better at gold mining than them.
"I apologize to you on behalf of the Boston Company, Mr. Liang."
Weber, who was already middle-aged, was as respectful to Liang Yao as he was to his superiors in the army, which made Weber feel very uncomfortable. The young man in front of him looked even younger than his children.
However, in order for the Boston Company to find more gold, Weber bowed his head and admitted his mistake to Liang Yao.
"Don't apologize to me, sir, apologize to me and my compatriots." Liang Yao corrected very seriously.
Weber had no choice but to take the members of Boston Company to apologize to Liang Yao and his tone became more sincere.
Deng Yan and Liang Yao's cousins had just learned English for a few days. They knew that the foreigners' sorry meant sorry. They knew that the foreigners had given in, and their backs straightened three points.
"This is the blueprint of the ore washing trough, but I will charge you a patent fee of 1,000 ounces of gold."
Berry of Boston Company was eager to take the blueprint from Liang Yao, but Liang Yao pulled it back.
"We don't have 1,000 ounces of gold, can it be cheaper?" Weber hesitated and begged.
Liang Yao did not intend to make any concessions on the price: "As long as there is an ore washing trough, with the manpower of your team, it will only take a few days to get 1,000 ounces of gold."
"Okay, I'll give you 350 ounces of gold first, which is all we have. For the remaining gold, I will sign a contract with you on behalf of Boston Company and pay you immediately after the remaining 650 ounces of gold are found." Weber said.
Liang Yao agreed to Weber's proposal. Weber asked someone to bring 350 ounces of gold, and then signed a contract with Liang Yao.
After receiving the drawings, the engineer of Boston Company couldn't help but beat his chest and stamp his feet. He always thought that these Oriental gold mining tools must have hidden secrets, but he didn't expect it to be such a simple thing.
This kind of thing can be made by any carpenter, but they actually paid 1,000 ounces of gold for it!
After the people from Boston Company left, Liang Yao began to consider the issue of expanding the team.
A small team of several people can no longer give him a sense of security. Robinson is right. Perhaps asking Flagg to send some mounted police to Sacramento can improve the public security here. At least improve the public security around his camp.
Of course, it takes gold to get those mounted police to Sacramento, but the money is worth spending. If they are unfortunately robbed by those bandits, losing gold is a small matter, but losing their lives is a big matter.
