PS: Article 55 of the Criminal Procedure Law establishes the principle of "attaching importance to evidence, investigation and research, and not easily believing confessions". But in practice, whether it was twenty years ago or now, confessions are still the king of evidence.

The only difference is that in the early years, "confessions were emphasized over evidence", but now objective evidence such as physical evidence, documentary evidence, and audio-visual materials must be used to verify the evidence, otherwise the procuratorate will not be able to accept it.

In other words, confessions alone cannot convict a person, because confessions cannot corroborate each other. But in actual case handling, other evidence can still be found, and if it cannot be found immediately, it can be first identified by judicial appraisal.

Based solely on confessions, there will indeed be false and wrongful convictions; but if the chain of evidence is required, there will inevitably be criminals who escape by luck.

To go deeper, confessions alone cannot convict a person without evidence.
