869 Earth Drilling Engineering (2)
Don’t think Mars is a safe place. It’s even more dangerous near Mars!
In the Earth’s near-Earth orbit, spacewalks are common, but no matter which level of space orbit, they are protected by the Earth’s magnetic field, which can effectively resist high-energy particles from the sun and the depths of the universe.
Mars is different. Its magnetic field disappeared billions of years ago. Only a small amount of magnetic field remains on the surface. Without a magnetic field covering the entire world, it cannot resist high-energy particles from the sun and the distant stars.
For the expeditionary fleet, high-energy particles are the second largest threat after aliens. Only the shell of the warship with added materials can block them. The thin shell of the engineering boat has a very limited effect. The power armor on the soldiers is not much stronger. Short-term off-ship work is not a big problem, but long-term off-ship activities are very dangerous.
To give a very simple example, a supernova explosion in the distant starry sky will eject a large amount of matter, and some heavy ions that have lost their extranuclear electrons will fly into deep space at a speed close to the speed of light. These heavy ions can easily penetrate the human body and break the DNA in the cells. Even if you don't feel anything at the time, you will get seriously ill afterwards, or even die from it.
Moreover, this thing can neither be discovered nor predicted. In order to resist heavy ions, the two spacecraft have to block above the engineering boat at all times.
Heavy ions are only one direction of danger, and the ubiquitous space dust also threatens the safety of the team members at all times!
Ye Han didn't know much about the situation in this regard, and secondly, he was so focused on the mission that he didn't pay attention to the situation in this regard at all. As a result, an accident occurred three days after the project started, that is, on October 9.
That afternoon, the No. 3 engineering boat was working at the designated location, and several team members in the boat were in their positions. Everything was no different from before.
Several team members suddenly heard a crisp sound of "bang", and a team member screamed. A small hole was pierced in the torso armor, and blood gushed out like a fountain.
The air in the boat was rapidly lost with a weakening hissing sound, and the flying blood beads floated to the side and upper side with the air. Several team members immediately found the location of the hole and immediately blocked the hole with an airtight plug.
The air pressure immediately rose, but several team members did not care about these things and immediately rushed to the injured comrade. It turned out that the injured had a puncture in the liver and had fallen into a coma.
The situation was urgent, and the team members had no time to contact the Luzhou. They immediately gave the injured a shot of hibernation hormone and then sent the seriously injured comrade back to the spacecraft as quickly as possible.
Because of the timely treatment, the injured finally saved his life, but one-fifth of the broken liver was removed.
Not only did he need a long-term rest, but he was also not suitable to continue to stay in the Marine Corps.
At Ye Han's insistence, all engineering boats stopped construction and conducted a comprehensive inspection of the No. 3 engineering boat. The investigation found that the culprit was just a piece of gravel the size of a finger.
Although the rubble was small in size, it was very hard, and the relative speed between it and Deimos was extremely high. It happened to hit the engineering boat, so it first penetrated the engineering boat, then penetrated the power armor, and injured a team member.
What made Ye Han even more unbearable was that the investigation found that the rubble actually came from Deimos!
In other words, the rubble produced by the drilling a few days ago turned around and penetrated the engineering boat. Ye Han didn't know what kind of coincidence was involved, but he strongly demanded to strengthen the protection of the soldiers and never let the same accident happen again.
Xu Moliang strongly opposed it, thinking that this was just an accidental accident, and the probability could not be smaller. Even if everyone stood on Deimos openly, they would not encounter the same situation again, and there was no need to stop work and affect the progress.
But Ye Han believed that if there was one, there would be two. Xu Moliang's statement had no basis at all. If the same situation happened again, it would be hard to say whether the people could be rescued.
The team members were risking their lives to work. If safety was not effectively guaranteed, how could they complete the project on time?
Ye Han was determined. Facing the strong Ye Han, Xu Moliang had to compromise. He spent a day removing a batch of armor plates from the Luzhou to reinforce the engineering boats, and the engineering boats resumed work one after another.
As time passed, the team members became more and more proficient, and the error of the wells became smaller and smaller. After a full half month, the soldiers finally drilled the first well without deviation. The drilling project entered the fast lane from then on, and wells with depths of hundreds of meters or even thousands of meters were completed one by one.
There were also some minor problems during the period, and equipment failures were commonplace. Once the drilling rig failed, the drill bit was stuck in the ground more than 70 meters deep. As a result, the drilling rig twisted the drill rod, and the broken drill rod hit the engineering boat and bounced off, flew into the air and hit the Luzhou, and finally no one knew where it flew.
There was another time when the fixing device of the engineering boat failed. After the drilling rig was started, it did not drill into the ground, but almost overturned the engineering boat.
There were also many other major and minor faults, but fortunately they were not serious problems. In addition, there were sufficient spare parts on the Luzhou, and the engineering boat could be repaired in the shortest time every time, which finally did not affect the progress of the project.
Although the soldiers complained privately, when it was their turn to be on duty, they walked into the engineering boat without hesitation.
The team members said self-deprecatingly that they had given birth after not touching the gun for such a long time. In the future, when there is no war, they can make a fortune by going home to dig wells.
Although the words were ridiculed, the actual situation was similar. The Marine Corps completely transformed into an engineering team and mastered all the procedures of drilling.
Of course, this technology can only be used on Deimos, where the gravity is so low that it can be ignored. No matter how the wells are dug, there is no danger of collapse, even if the satellite is penetrated.
In this way, Ye Han led his team to work for more than a month, and finally completed all the wells on Deimos in early November. The wells almost turned Deimos into a super beehive. As long as the nuclear bomb is sent into the well, it can slowly wait for Jupiter's zero.
Although there are many wells, only a small part of them needs to be placed for nuclear bomb explosions. The purpose of digging so many wells is to shape the "ammunition"!
When Ye Han first learned about this, he was completely confused. He didn't understand what the wells had to do with shaping. After listening to Xu Moliang's explanation, he realized that many wells formed a weaker separation layer around the "ammunition". In this way, the blasting separation layer is destroyed first, which can maximize the appearance of the "ammunition" and minimize the ammunition being broken by the nuclear explosion.
The project on Deimos is completed, and the project on Phobos is about to begin.
