Chapter 1611 Adolf’s Threat
"Since Elmo left, DreamWorks seems to have a preference in hiring people." Li Zitao looked at him and asked: "Can you tell me what is the reason?"
"Reality!" Adolf said bluntly: "Charlie, you can't ask everyone to have a broad mind. This is Hollywood, and the competition is fierce and cruel."
"So, this has nothing to do with racial prejudice or discrimination?" Li Zitao did not expect that he could answer so neatly.
"Yes, I'm sure." Adolf behaved normally.
Li Zitao shrugged and smiled; "Maybe!"
"In that case, I guess adding an Asian character to the six-person party won't be a problem, right?"
"But judging from the script, this is not appropriate." Adolf pondered.
"Is the script inappropriate, or does someone think it is inappropriate?" Li Zitao looked at him with a smile, as if he had read through his inner thoughts.
"Okay, Charlie!" Adolf spread his hands and said calmly: "I think you are right... When selecting roles, it is unfair to some people, but what's so strange about that?"
"The world is inherently unfair. Only idealists will believe that it can be achieved. We all know what 'fairness' is."
"You are right." Li Zitao nodded in agreement: "So, I ask you to add an Asian to the characters. I believe it will not be a problem for you."
"No." Adolf looked at him seriously: "This is a big problem."
The smile on Li Zitao's face disappeared and he said coldly: "Are you rejecting me?"
Adolf did not answer his question directly, but instead said: "If you look carefully, you will find that the company's development has been slower and slower in recent years."
"We are being ostracized by this industry because of various unconventional behaviors... giving important roles to a minority, giving them lines, lenses, and normal roles."
"Charlie, this is wrong, we shouldn't do this." Adolf said seriously; "Because many people are hostile to DreamWorks and have complaints from their own people."
"Complaints from my own people?" Li Zitao seemed a little surprised when he heard it for the first time.
Adolf said in a serious tone; "Yes, these things are also full of criticism within the company."
"Other companies have used white people as the main characters and excluded minorities, but DreamWorks has given those people the opportunities that belong to them."
"If it were you, do you think this is normal when everyone is doing this?" Adolf seemed to be questioning him.
"Their opportunities?" Li Zitao nodded as if in agreement, and then asked with a sudden smile; "You think so too...all opportunities belong to white people?"
"It doesn't matter what I think, it's what Hollywood does." Adolph didn't want his personal emotions to seep into the topic.
This is the general trend, not one person's idea or prejudice. Everyone does it, and the person who goes against it is naturally wrong.
The minority obeys the majority, and what the public thinks is right is right. This has been the case since ancient times.
"So, my company, my script, but I can't decide who should star?" Li Zitao asked as if he was joking.
Adolf was silent for a moment and said, "No, you just chose to do the right thing."
"The right thing." Li Zitao shook his head and smiled: "I should decide whether it is right or not, not you, and not those irrelevant people outside."
"You can't go against everyone, that's asking for trouble!" Adolf dissuaded.
"Really?" Li Zitao said funnyly; "If you could avoid trouble by pleasing others, the Civil War would never have happened."
Adolf laughed dryly and remained silent, trying to change the topic. He didn't want to argue with Li Zitao on this issue.
"Adolf." Li Zitao looked at him seriously and said seriously: "The name of this company is DreamWorks, and its person in charge is Charlie Lee, not Adolf Zucker."
"Do you have to do this?" Adolf looked at him coldly,
After realizing that Li Zitao had made up his mind, he took out a list from his pocket.
"What is it?" Li Zitao opened it casually and took a look, his expression immediately became serious.
It's a list of directors, actors, lighting, cinematographers and support staff, with their signatures on it.
Adolf smiled and said; "If you insist, these people will leave with me."
"Then what? Open your own business?" Li Zitao said pretending to be relaxed.
Adolf shrugged and said easily: "If that day comes, I think so."
"Are you threatening me?" Li Zitao stopped.
Adolf said modestly, "This is not a threat, but a kind advice. This is good for you, me, and everyone."
"Really?" Li Zitao looked at the list again, shook it and smiled; "Can I keep it?"
"Of course, you can keep it." A trace of pride flashed in Adolf's eyes, and it seemed that he had compromised, just as he expected.
"The charcoal has been burned. Come on, let's have something to eat together. Today should be a happy day." Li Zitao put the list in his pocket, patted him on the shoulder and said with a smile.
The BBQ was very successful. Li Zitao used ingredients bought from Chinatown, chili and pepper noodles, and paired them with natural and fragrant powder. It tasted great.
"Thank you for the invitation. This meal is so delicious." Adolf kept praising before leaving. This barbecue was the most delicious meal he had ever eaten.
"You're welcome." Li Zitao patted his shoulder and said meaningfully: "I hope you will be in a good mood next time we meet."
"Has everyone left?" Li Zitao returned to the house, where several women were cleaning up the mess.
"Yeah." Li Zitao sat on the sofa absentmindedly, looking at the list from Adolf's hand.
He has no memory of most of the people recorded here. Since the development of DreamWorks, the people in it have changed a lot.
However, the list of more than fifty people still attracted his attention.
But he actually thought that he could compromise in this way. Isn't he a little too naive?
"Is something wrong?" Grace put her arms around his neck, put her face against his and looked at the list curiously.
"Do you know the people above?" Li Zitao wanted to know how important these people are to DreamWorks.
Grace frowned and read out the names on the list: "Eric von Strauchen, Kim Vidor, Fritz Lang, George Cook..."
"They are all well-known directors in Hollywood. If we lose them, more than half of the busy studio will be vacant."
Grace didn't understand what the list represented, so she was able to joke in a light-hearted tone when talking about this fact.
