Chapter 1818: Summer in Fool Village (32)
Selina stood in the sailboat cabin not far from Gotham Beach, while Maggie was counting money and taking stock of today's gains. All the small accessories they made the day before were sold out. After deducting the cost, they still made a net profit of more than twenty dollars.
Just as Selina was pouring ice soda into her mouth, Maggie stuffed a roll of dollars into Selina's hand. Selina was about to say something, but Maggie said, "Don't say those words that make me jealous and want to push you into the sea. I know it's nothing, but if you want to refuse Bruce to hang a lot of things on you, you must have some confidence."
Selina immediately came to Maggie's side, kissed Maggie hard, and said to her with a smile: "Okay, I know you don't like me to be a thief. I haven't done that for a long time. Earn money by labor, right?"
Maggie pushed her away with a little disgust and said, "This is to prevent him from saying to you one day when you quarrel, 'If you leave me, you can only be a thief.'"
"Don't worry, if he dares to say that to me, I will scratch his face." Although Selina said this, she still sighed.
After parting with Maggie, Selina got a ride from the owner of the sailing cabin, but Selina was going to Wayne Manor, which was not entirely on the way with the owner, so Selina asked the owner to stop at an intersection at the junction of the South District and the East District, and she walked to Wayne Manor.
On the way to Wayne Manor, Selina suddenly found a large retail supermarket opened next to the middle-class community on the edge of the South District. It looked like a chain brand, with a huge floor-to-ceiling window and a variety of goods displayed behind it.
Selina was not very interested in shopping in the supermarket. There were two very large trees planted in front of the mall. The shade there could help Selina avoid the sun when walking this section of the road. She walked over there without thinking.
There happened to be a floor-to-ceiling window next to the shade of the tree. Selina looked inside when she had nothing to do while walking. Suddenly, her steps stopped because she saw a familiar product on the row of retail shelves closest to the window in this supermarket.
"Oh my god, is that a poor man's cookie?" Selina covered her forehead with her hands, leaned over the window to look inside, and said in amazement: "This thing is still on sale? It has risen to 39 cents?! I remember when I was a kid, it only cost 5 cents a small bag."
Selina licked her lips, as if she was recalling the taste in her memory. She hesitated for a moment, looked at the reward that Maggie stuffed into her hand, which happened to have a few coins, and finally walked into the supermarket.
Two minutes later, Selina came out with two bags of cookies with satisfaction. She walked to the flower bed in front of the floor-to-ceiling window and sat down. She put a bag of cookies on the side of her legs and picked up the other bag to examine it.
"It turns out that five packs are combined into one pack, but that's a lot more expensive, my old friend, now I'm afraid no one dares to call you a poor cookie, after all, Wayne chocolate cookies are only one dollar a pack."
Selena muttered while tearing the package with her hands, but she fiddled with it for a long time before she found that this kind of family packaging has no convenient opening at all, and it is difficult to open without scissors.
Selena fumbled around and found that she had no weapons on her body, not even a slightly sharp key. She sighed, picked up another pack of cookies and stood up, thinking that she could only return to Wayne Manor to find a solution.
Soon Alfred pushed open the door of the manor, smiled and said to Selina who came in: "Miss Aisha went to Rodriguez Manor for class, and she will be back in about half an hour. You can have afternoon tea first, I will prepare it now."
"No, no, Alfred." Selina called Alfred, shook the biscuits in her hand and said: "I have this, can you give me a pair of scissors?"
Selina quickly took out a small bag of biscuits from the sturdy family packaging. There were two not-so-thick cookie flour sugar and chocolate chips in the small bag, and a layer of butter was brushed on the surface. After drying, it was earthy yellow.
Selina just put a cookie into her mouth, and as if she had thought of something, she said, "By the way, Alfred, I want to go to Bruce's study. There shouldn't be anything important there now, right?"
"No, you can use it. Do you need me to bring the tea tray over for you?"
"Thank you, but no, I'm not thirsty now."
After that, Selina held the cookie in her mouth and walked to the second floor, then opened the door of the study and walked in. Alfred stood beside the coffee table, scanning the thesis-like ingredient list on the cookie package that Selina left on the table with his eagle-like sharp eyes.
At dinner, Selina and Bruce were told that Aisha stayed overnight at Rodriguez Manor, so they did not go to the big restaurant for dinner, but sat opposite each other on the kitchen island to eat the simple meal made by Alfred.
The main course was a sandwich with cold black pork ham slices and pea puree, Belgian cream mussels and oil-soaked tuna tartare. Selina took a big bite of the sandwich and found that Bruce looked at her with an inexplicable hesitation under the dim light.
Selina gave Bruce a puzzled look, but Bruce still hesitated and finished a tartare before speaking: "Did you go to the study today?"
"Yes, Alfred said there was nothing important there, so I went to find a book to read. Of course, I didn't read it carefully, I just flipped through it."
"Did you eat anything in there?"
Selina froze immediately. She tried hard to swallow the food in her mouth, rolled her eyes to the other side and said, "Probably... nothing, or... a little bit?"
"Is there anything or not?" Bruce asked helplessly.
"Well, I ate a cookie, which is not a savory food, and I wrapped it with a tissue, so it definitely didn't contaminate your book."
Bruce took out a small transparent bag from his pocket, just like the rectangular bag often used in chemical laboratories to hold a small piece of solid raw materials, and inside it was a piece of cookie crumbs as big as half a fingernail.
"Oh my god, when did it fall?!" Selina said in disbelief, "I look down at the ground 20 times every time I eat a bite, how could it still fall apart?"
"I found it in the gap of the sofa next to the bed. It might have fallen on your clothes when you were reading, and then slipped into the gap when you stood up."
"Come on, Bruce, you must have had afternoon tea in the study, right? This kind of food will fall apart, and I'm not a cookie detective."
Selina looked at Bruce with her eyes wide open, trying to get away with it, but she found that Bruce's expression did not change, so she had to groan in frustration and said.
"Well, I thought I could eat there, so I brought the unfinished cookies in. I promise I won't do that next time. I'm not saying the cookies won't fall apart, but I won't fall on the sofa in your study again. I promise!"
Looking at Selena who made a cross on her chest and swore, Bruce placed the small bag flat on the table, then he put his hands on the table, looked at Selena and said, "You can eat in the study. I used to have afternoon tea there. The reason why the cookies fell apart is complicated, but I don't care."
"But, Selena, I analyzed the surface of the cookies and found that the cookies were not crumbly. The pore structure of the powder and the source of the cocoa powder in this half chocolate bean, I found that this is a product produced by a cheap food company from the metropolis, and the price is 39 cents for a family pack of GNE chocolate butter cookies..."
Selena opened her eyes wide in shock. She heard the dissatisfaction in Bruce's words, so she put down the food in her hand, jumped off the bar stool, spread her hands and looked at Bruce and said: "Oh my God! Listen to what you say, cheap food production company, food is just food, you don't want to stop me from eating the cheap food you mentioned? ! "
"Come on, Bruce, I'm not a rich girl who was born to eat organic food like you. You can't ask me to completely stop eating food produced on industrial assembly lines just because you think it's cheap food. This is much more outrageous than the terrible skirts you insist on putting on me!"
"Listen, Selena, it has nothing to do with its price. I'm definitely not..."
"You're definitely not discriminating against my background." Selena stood across the island counter, her hands on her hips, looking at Bruce and said, "Then you have to say that I have better choices now, and I don't need to eat these cheap foods anymore. You provide me with these because you love me, so I don't need to mind at all, and don't be ashamed of living a better life. You completely forgive my little habits..."
"Okay, listen to me too, Bruce, I'm very sorry for getting cookie crumbs on your sofa. Next time I will try not to eat anywhere other than the dining table, but I will eat what I want, whether it's cheap or not, you can't manipulate me in this regard."
Bruce's expression seemed a little helpless. Selena looked into his eyes and took two steps back, shook her head and turned to walk out the door.
Selina left Wayne Manor. With her skills, she didn't need to worry about the security situation in Gotham at night, so she climbed to the roof of a building and planned to take a walk in Gotham to vent her boredom as before.
But just when she climbed to the roof, a black shadow appeared behind her, and a slightly hoarse female voice came from the wind: "Look, an angry little cat, has it quarreled with your owner?"
Selina turned her head and saw a black-haired woman in a dark windbreaker standing behind her. In an instant, Selina remembered that she seemed to have seen this face in the newspaper
"Talia Aug?"
"It's me." Talia smiled, and stood behind Selina without knowing when, and then said: "Are you angry because I accused your richest boyfriend?"
Selina took a deep breath, and she moved instantly, flashing to the side as flexibly as a cat, and the black whip rolled towards Talia like a flexible snake tail.
"Are you angry because of what I said?" Talia dodged swiftly and threw three hidden weapons, which did not force Selina to retreat. She observed the trajectory of the whip and said, "It seems that you are going to stand on Bruce's side. But then again, how many women can refuse the title of the wife of the world's richest man?"
With a "snap", the whip became more powerful. Talia saw the anger and murderous intent on Selina's face, but she didn't notice her hand that was bent like an eagle's claw behind her back.
"Swish!"
It was late at night, and Bruce, who was still standing in front of the kitchen island, looked at Selina who pushed the door and walked in, his eyes fell on her fingers that were still stained with blood.
Selina's eyes gleamed in the darkness. She stared at Bruce and said, "I apologize for what I said before. Cheap food is not the most exaggerated adjective. We used to call that kind of biscuits 'poor man's cookies'."
"I didn't mean..."
"Shut up and listen to me. Do you know why I bought it?"
Bruce looked at Selina silently. He knew that Selina didn't need his answer. Selina threw the whip in her hand on the sofa beside her and said, "When I followed Lucky Mom and stole things for her, she would go to places we didn't know every week to buy a large bag of loose poor man's cookies at five cents a bag and put it on the top of the closet."
"Only the best-performing children can get a small bag, and I have an extra bag every week because I have the best relationship with her and she likes me very much."
"With you guys who have been holding black tea in the farm since birth, It's different from the rich guys who have afternoon tea in the garden. It was the only sweet food I could eat when I was a child, so I bought it. "
Bruce's expression softened, but before a second passed, he heard Selina roaring: "This is the story you want to hear, right! Poor people either have a tragic past or have no choice or are short-sighted to choose something! You damn rich guys!"
"I tell you, Bruce Wayne, I would rather eat a bag of poor cookies for 39 cents than a small piece of organic cake for 39 dollars you provide me, just because cheap cookies are sweet enough! I just love to eat high-sugar and high-calorie junk food!!!"
"And I don't want to wear like a Christmas tree at the wedding, not because the clothes are so expensive and have such a good background, and I don't think I can afford it, but because it's fucking uncomfortable!!!"
