Chapter 7: Grievances
The forest had become quiet at this time. As the villagers gradually approached the mountain temple in the deep mountains, the thunder and lightning in the night sky completely disappeared. There was no longer the silver snake dancing wildly, lightning and thunder as before.
Even the howling wind in the mountain stopped at this time, and the whole Hanyu Mountain was strangely quiet.
The villagers walking in the forest were all panicked and nervous. The abnormal weather made everyone feel scared.
Especially not long ago, they witnessed the terrifying scene of the thunder splitting the mountain. The scene that seemed to be the end of the world made the fear in the hearts of the villagers ferment to an almost fatal level.
So when they saw the mountain temple, all the villagers subconsciously stopped breathing and dared not move forward, fearing that something terrible would happen. It was not until the old village chief urged angrily that the panicked villagers gritted their teeth and trembled their feet and walked towards the mountain temple.
This mountain temple was built more than 80 years ago. According to the old people, it was originally funded by a wealthy businessman in the city. But after the mountain god temple was built, the mountain god appeared in the mountain, and Shuisheng Village had no choice but to offer incense to the mountain god in exchange for protection.
In the eighty years that followed, Shuisheng Village had hardly suffered from famine, and even the wild animals in the mountains stopped coming down the mountain. Even in the coldest days of winter, the hungry wild animals in the mountains would not come down the mountain to eat people. The village lived a relatively peaceful life under the protection of the mountain god.
But everyone knew that the mountain god in Hanyu Mountain was not gentle, but fierce and brutal. If you dare to disobey it, you will definitely bring about a huge disaster.
The old people spread horror stories about the mountain god getting angry, tearing people alive, and even letting the fields wither and the crops fail, warning everyone to respect the mountain god and never bring disaster to the village.
But now, they seem to have angered the mountain god.
The virgin girl who was supposed to be offered up secretly escaped back to the village. This was a terrible disaster that made people's scalps numb even if they thought about it!
But the villagers did not even dare to run away. They could only force themselves to walk towards the mountain temple with trembling legs, praying in their hearts that the mountain god would show mercy and let them live.
In such a panic, the villagers finally came to the gate of the mountain temple.
In the dark forest, the mountain temple illuminated by the light of torches was a little gloomy. The rattan wooden sedan chair left in the temple during the day was still there, and the ropes cut by sharp weapons were scattered in the temple.
Seeing the cut rope, the villagers were more convinced that the girl had escaped by herself. They glared at the girl fiercely, but at this time in front of the statue of the mountain god, no one dared to make a loud noise.
After tying the girl to the rattan sedan again, the villagers retreated cautiously and planned to guard outside. This time, no one dared to leave without permission. They had to stay here until the mountain god took the girl away.
But when the villagers retreated to the door of the mountain god temple, the clay statue on the altar suddenly moved. Then, a low, faintly echoing terrifying sound rang in everyone's ears.
"What are you... arguing about?"
The gloomy whisper was not loud, but it was like thunder exploding in the ears of the villagers, and everyone was frightened and collapsed to the ground.
The only one who could still remain calm was the elderly village chief. He was horrified to see that the clay statue on the altar seemed to come alive and was looking at them with a cold look.
The old village chief was startled and immediately knelt on the ground, kowtowing desperately.
"Please have mercy on the mountain god! Please have mercy on the mountain god!"
The village chief's pleading and shouting awakened the group of frightened young men around him. Other villagers also knelt down and kowtowed desperately to beg for mercy, imitating the village chief.
"Please have mercy, Lord Mountain God! Please have mercy, Lord Mountain God!"
The crowd's uniform shouts for mercy spread far away, and aroused waves of echoes in the mountains and forests.
"Have mercy..."
"Have mercy..."
On the altar, Lu Heng looked at the group of villagers who kept kowtowing and begging for mercy, and was a little confused.
He was lying on the ground to digest the power of thunder and evil in his body, and this group of villagers appeared inexplicably. What are these people doing here in the middle of the night?
However, when Lu Heng saw the girl who was tied to the rattan chair again and the scar on the girl's forehead, he roughly understood what was going on.
"Did you send her back?" Lu Heng asked.
When the statue spoke, the villagers all stopped shouting for mercy. They knelt in front of the temple gate, bowed their heads, and dared not move.
Only the old village chief raised his head tremblingly and explained, "Lord Mountain God, we sent her back. We caught her in the village when she ran away, and we knew that you, Lord Mountain God, must be very angry, so we immediately sent her back. She ran away alone, and we didn't know about it at all! Please have mercy, Lord Mountain God!"
After the village chief finished speaking, he kowtowed again, making a bang on the yellow mud floor.
Behind the village chief, all the villagers followed suit and kowtowed hard, "Please have mercy, Lord Mountain God!"
The scene of dozens of people kowtowed at the same time was spectacular, but Lu Heng was speechless when he saw this scene.
He really didn't expect that these villagers were so afraid of him that they were like frightened birds. But thinking about the wolf demon's previous actions, it was not the villagers' fault for having such a reaction.
He sighed and said, "Okay, raise your heads, I won't blame you. It was indeed me who let this little girl go back, and she didn't run away privately."
After saying this, Lu Heng ignored the villagers' shocked reactions after hearing this. The clay statue on the altar exhaled a wisp of cold wind, which blew over the girl on the rattan sedan.
There seemed to be a mysterious power in the cold wind. The moment it blew over the girl's body, the ropes tied to her body automatically broke.
The girl regained the ability to move freely again, and even the cloth tied around her mouth fell loose.
On the dark altar, the clay statue looked down at the girl on the rattan sedan and asked, "Why don't you tell them the truth of the matter?"
The question of the mountain god startled all the villagers, and then they were a little nervous.
When the mountain god opened his mouth, they didn't understand that they had made a mistake. Did the girl really not run away privately, but the mountain god let her go?
Although I don't know why the mountain god let her go, but now that this group of people are smart enough to tie the girl back and disturb the mountain god's peace, wouldn't this anger the mountain god...
The villagers were so scared that the old village chief, who was always calm, was trembling slightly. Everyone secretly looked at the girl on the rattan sedan, fearing that the girl would say something fatal next.
But after the girl on the rattan sedan regained her freedom, she didn't say anything.
She raised her head blankly and looked up at the clay statue of the white wolf on the altar. Facing the vicious mountain god rumored by the old people, she was not afraid in her heart, but instead felt endless grievances.
On the way here, the girl thought she would not cry anymore. But when she heard the words of the mountain god to clear her name and thought about how she was treated after returning to the village, the grievances that the girl had suppressed all the way finally broke out.
With a "wow", the girl burst into tears.
The cry spread far away and echoed among the mountains. She cried so heartbreakingly and sadly, and made the villagers in front of the mountain temple feel embarrassed and uncomfortable.
