Chapter 536: Peace
"Your Majesty, he is here."
In the Minsk castle, Peter sat on the highest throne. Wherever they looked, no one dared to look up.
"Let our king come in."
Wladyslaw himself came to Minsk, he was ready for peace talks, yes, he was ready for peace talks.
After returning to Warsaw, he received news from the nobles, asking him to negotiate peace with Rome. If he did not negotiate, they would not recognize you as the king.
Wladyslaw didn't know what was going on, but later he learned that many hunting parties came from the direction of Rome and rushed directly to the Polish countryside to rob people. How could he bear this?
Unable to continue the fight, Wladyslaw decided to negotiate with the emperor himself. Even half of the land will be divided.
Wladyslaw came to the castle, which he was very familiar with. When he was a child, he and his father spent summers here. Now it is occupied by the Roman emperor.
Peter opened his arms and hugged each other. "Welcome to you. I hope you are ready for peace."
"Of course my friend, I am here to prepare for peace between the two countries."
Wladyslaw sat down with Peter, and Mihai next to him. The three of them discussed the situation in Eastern Europe together.
"I think your Excellency has also seen it clearly. Kiev and Minsk have already come under the rule of the empire. You have no other choice but to cede them."
As soon as we open our mouth, we will cede territory, so we can no longer talk about it. But Wladyslaw was different. He knew that the war could not be stopped without bloodshed, so he began to bargain.
“The land south of Kiev and Smolensk can be ceded, but it is impossible to cede Minsk.”
“If Minsk can’t do it, can Polotsk do it?”
This is not possible either, Polotsk is not far from Vilnius. Once here, Vilnius will be directly exposed to Moscow's artillery fire.
"Your Majesty, I wonder if your country is sincere in peace talks?"
Wladyslaw was a little angry, but Peter didn't panic and just took a document and handed it to him. "This is our condition, take a look at it."
Wladyslaw almost fainted when he saw it, and ceded Ukraine to Rome; Smolensk, Minsk, and Polotsk to Moscow, and asked for 1 million lei as a ransom to redeem Vytautas.
"This...is this the condition of your country?"
"That's right"
Wladyslaw was so angry that he wanted to vomit blood. This was the overlord clause. If he signs, 70% of Lithuania's land will be lost.
"Sorry, I cannot agree to this. I hope we can continue to talk and strive to reach a peace agreement."
They had known for a long time that Wladyslaw would not agree, and neither of them was in a hurry. He had time to take his time, but the other party couldn't. The noble pressed him too hard, and he was afraid he would have to make a decision early.
"If Your Excellency cannot agree, then I have no choice but to go to Vilnius and persuade those nobles to agree. Moreover, Your Excellency can also go together."
Wladyslaw was a little angry, "Is this a threat?", Mihai replied calmly: "You can understand this, but if you can't agree, then Vilnius and Samogitia will not be saved. You can’t even keep the crown on your head.”
Wladyslaw simply said that he needed to think about it and ran back to the reception area. At night, the Polish king couldn't sleep in the reception room. He was angry. His army had not suffered any losses and could still fight. It was all the nobles who had put themselves in such a situation. It was them.
In fact, Wladyslaw was forced to negotiate peace thanks to the Lithuanians. Because during this winter, the capture of the Lithuanians was not idle, and an army formed by Rus and Cossacks appeared in Vilnius.
Regarding these, the Lithuanian nobles gave up and asked Wladyslaw to negotiate peace as soon as possible. They also wanted to redeem Vytautas, but when it came to borrowing money, they all withdrew, like iron roosters. It's of no use at all.
"Father, it seems to me that this is the only way." Wladyslaw shed tears for the first time. He felt sad for his helplessness.
The next day Wladyslaw came to Peter, and he wanted to make a last-ditch effort. But Peter ruthlessly shattered his illusions.
"I'm sorry, but now you, what bargaining chips do you have?"
Finally, with Wladyslaw in tears, the three signed the Treaty of Minsk.
The treaty stipulated that Lithuania would cede the area south of Kiev to the Cossack Emirate and Rome, while Poland would keep Lviv. At the same time, Smolensk and the land west of Minsk were ceded to Moscow but Polotsk was retained.
Regarding the handling of Vytautas, Poland is prepared to redeem the Grand Duke for 1 million lei. But before that, he was wronged and continued to live in a Roman prison.
When Wladyslaw took the pen and signed the treaty. He felt very wronged in his heart, and when the last letter was written, he shed tears. He was not willing to accept that the efforts of generations of Lithuanians were in vain.
"Congratulations, your actions have brought peace to the country." Mihai congratulated him.
"Peace is just a truce. Remember, one day I will get back everything I lost."
"Okay, I'll wait for you."
The opponent's slightly relaxed words almost allowed Wladyslaw to break through the defense. How come the threat was so casual in their eyes. Where have the glory and terror of Poland and Lithuania gone?
Władysław left in despair. His departure also marked the decline of Lithuania. It could have been the first Eastern European power with Poland, but it was impossible. It was even a question whether the country could survive until the 16th century. After he left, Mihaly laughed. Such a victory was enough for him to be crowned as the Tsar.
Peter was also very happy. The whole of Ukraine was basically taken. Then, as long as the Caucasus was taken, the entire Black Sea would belong to Rome.
Although most of the Caucasus region is now grassland, Peter knows that in the future, it will become one of the most economically developed regions in Russia. The local food and minerals are very rich, and there are two rivers, the Volga River and the Don River. The water conservancy is rich and can fully support large-scale irrigation agriculture.
"Jagiewo can't sleep now."
"Haha, I hope he and his family can continue to rule."
After giving each other a blessing, Peter decided to leave Minsk in the spring. He couldn't stay outside for too long, otherwise something would happen inside the empire.
"My dear brother, the road ahead depends on you. I hope you can keep going."
"I will, big brother."
The Bartland family has always been united, at least for now. One is the Roman emperor, and the other is about to become the Russian tsar. Eastern Europe is basically controlled by the two of them. Poland's power has not yet risen but has been suppressed.
