Cyberpunk 2074: Shadows of the Past

Chapter 28 Sue the Angel to Death

January 12, 2074, morning

Yaori caressed Lucy's angelic face with warm golden satin.

She covered her flawless face with her hands and slowly opened her eyes.

She forgot who had told her that after spending the night in the wilderness, she must cover her face with her hands before opening her eyes when she woke up during the day.

She couldn't remember the original words, but that was roughly what they meant.

The memories of her childhood were deliberately abandoned in a corner, allowing the torrent of time to wash them into pieces.

Even so, she would occasionally pick up a piece of the past inadvertently.

What followed was heartbreaking pain and sleepless nights.

That was the epitaph carved on her heart by dozens of dead souls.

When the whispers of the undead gradually faded away in her ears, she sat up and dusted herself off.

She tightened the rags that wrapped her body, and slowly but firmly set foot on the road to the Night City.

Apart from a huge pothole, there was no interesting sight on the road. All I could see was a barren and bad soil composed of mud and yellow sand.

She stared at the pothole from afar.

The bottomless shadow in the cave easily wiped out her slight curiosity.

So she slowly walked around this place of divine punishment.

Under the shadow, the corpses of nine stars and tens of thousands of bones were buried.

She knew nothing and kept walking.

The sun high in the sky watched her quietly.

Her shadow was dragged long across the ground.

The day after Lucy came to Night City.

The disparity between rents in Night City shocked her.

With little savings, she chose to settle down temporarily on the fifth floor of the super skyscraper H4.

The equipment and pool used for deep diving were naturally left to the landlord's family, which was an extra reward for the mother and daughter's careful care.

Cannot connect to cyberspace at the moment.

You have to find a way to make money.

She was sitting on the subway, thinking to herself.

Soon, she found a way to make money.

January 14, 2074, 8:30

Night City Metro Line 4.

"Thanks for your help, Rob."

"So, are you and Clementine back together?"

"Well..." The man in a long trench coat nodded lightly, with a smile on his lips.

"Well done! Joel." The middle-aged man with thinning hair excitedly patted the back of his friend next to him.

"What about you?" Joel leaned his head against the train's glass window, but looked at his friend.

"Well, you know, there have been some disasters in biotechnology recently, and they said there will be emergency layoffs. I am tight on money recently, and my wife and daughter have to spend money on medical treatment..."

"I'll lend it to you..."

This old friend did not hesitate to spend a lot of money to issue task commissions for his own sake. He was already short of money and now his situation is even worse.

Joel sighed and immediately transferred the money to Rob.

"Thanks, brother..." Rob was not pretentious. Under the heavy pressure of company layoffs and the illness of his wife and children, this middle-aged man had to abandon all dignity.

Fortunately, he still has friends.

"What's wrong, Rob?"

As they were about to get off the bus, Joel looked at his friend who kept touching his neck in confusion.

"It's okay..." Rob scratched the few hairs he had and smiled awkwardly, "Maybe he was bitten by bed bugs. My neck is a little itchy..."

Joel smiled and punched his friend, separated from him in the company square, and waved goodbye.

"Clementine!" Joel opened the door to the apartment and gently hugged the long-haired woman who threw herself into his arms.

"Welcome home!"

Maybe it's a blessing in disguise.

Once, they took the initiative to receive treatment and chose to completely forget each other.

Now, they swear to Yue that they will stay together for the rest of their lives and stay together until they grow old.

"How about we go to a restaurant for a meal tomorrow night?" Clementine asked softly, lying in the man's warm arms.

"Okay, let's call Rob again. Without his entrustment, we might still be kept in the dark by the clinic."

"Hmm..." She responded softly, slowly drawing circles on the man's chest.

January 15, 2074

Lucy's fourth day in Night City.

The Night City was just like what she had imagined thousands of times in her dreams, full of filth and foul smell.

During the day, she likes to ride the subway in Night City, steal sinful money, and browse the pus-oozing flesh and blood in the heart, spleen, and lungs of this man-eating beast.

At night, she was used to smoking and walking through the streets of Night City, like a lonely wandering soul.

She is like the poet Dante, humming the Divine Comedy, walking between the nine levels of hell and the seven levels of purgatory.

Walk with evil spirits amidst the sputtering lava and diffuse smoke, and glimpse a mottled corner of reality in the blood and fire.

The strong wind and heavy rain drowned out the melody she hummed softly.

2074, January 15, 20:30

"Strange, why hasn't Rob arrived yet?" Joel glanced at the digital projection suspended on the wall in confusion.

"Why don't you go meet him at the door? As we all know, Rob doesn't know his way around well..." Clementine laughed and made a harmless joke.

In her hands she held two precious bouquets of flowers.

In the Night City, these two bunches of bright red and green are worth their weight in gold.

One bouquet was bought for her by Joel in memory of his undying love for her;

Another bunch they were going to give to Rob in memory of him and his long friendship.

"Okay..." Joel scratched his hair, signaled the waiter to serve the food later, left a heavy kiss on Clementine's lips, turned around and went downstairs.

"Hello? Rob, where are you? Clementine and I are waiting for you..."

Joel stood outside the gate on the first floor to contact his friends, an ominous premonition eroding his trembling heart.

A heavy rainstorm swept outside the door, followed by strong winds, forcing Joel to squint his eyes.

"Joel...I'm done..."

"What do you mean?" Joel shouted in confusion. Only in this way would his voice not be swallowed up by the wind and rain.

"The money...is missing..." the voice on the other end of the phone was intermittent, "The company laid me off...my wife and daughter have no money to receive treatment in a high-end clinic...just...the operation failed..."

"Rob?!" Joel shouted, but the phone had been hung up.

"Joel..." came the unfamiliar hoarse voice of a friend from behind, like the terrifying roar of a hell ghost walking on earth.

"Rob?" Joel turned around in confusion, and the raindrops hit his face obliquely in the wind, making him unable to open his eyes.

"sorry……"

Some bald men stood silently in the rain, just behind Joel.

He lifted off the robe he was wearing and had explosives tied all over his body.

"I have nothing left! Joel!" He roared crazily, with a ferocious face.

The ticking sound of the countdown was drowned in the raindrops.

"You are the only friend I have left...hahahahaha..."

His madness, his roar, and the explosion of fire echoed through tonight's torrential rain at the same time.

The dazzling light shot into the sky, attracting the attention of countless people.

Clementine, who was sitting in the restaurant on the fifth floor, smiled, holding two bouquets of flowers, and looked at the beautiful fireworks that were as brilliant as the last bloom of life.

She was waiting for a pair of friends and walked into the restaurant side by side.

Join her under this grand fireworks to celebrate the priceless love and friendship.

It's a pity that she can't wait her whole life.

2074, January 15, 20:45

The ghostly figure wandering at night was also attracted by the explosion in the sky.

Wearing a plastic raincoat, she stood quietly in front of a man's broken body.

The mechanical pupils that rolled to the ground still seemed to be filled with shock and astonishment.

Lucy tried to light a cigarette, but the tiny flame that rose was instantly extinguished by the howling wind and howling rain.

She sighed quietly, took out the plastic bag she carried with her, and collected the broken body of this strange man.

I made a lot of money today and am in a good mood.

May this stranger be given a decent burial by the way.

She thought to herself, but felt that the mutilated face looked familiar.

Illusion.

She sighed, carrying a small plastic bag, and walked to the nearby self-service crematorium.

Walking in the night, the wind and rain passed her by, and she sang a low divine song again, like an angel bidding death.

2074, January 16, 8:00

"Good morning... Night City... last night... restaurant... madman... explosion... deceased... Joel Carey..."

Host Kuo Noisy's voice woke Xi Da from her sweet dream.

"Yahweh?" She pouted dissatisfiedly.

She was a little surprised why the person next to her was sitting on the edge of the bed, listening to the radio, motionless.

"Joel is dead..." he said softly.

His tone was indifferent.

Like a cold blade, the knife was indifferently carved on the cold stone, leaving only a simple epitaph.

Just like the life of that gloomy man, it was dull and boring.

Xi Da silently hugged him from behind.

She felt bad that he had taken another step toward someone.

This was the second time that Yahweh had some strong emotions toward someone other than Heda.

Xida didn't know if this was a good thing.

All she could do now was hold him silently.

Xida has Roger, Gloria, and many kind-hearted people who can rely on.

She is the only one Yahweh can rely on.

She sighed softly, gently tolerating his temporary vulnerability.

The sun penetrated the glass and shone on his profile, leaving a silent silhouette.

It was very exciting when I wrote it, and I don’t know how everyone felt after reading it.
