Chapter 6 Gorky City

Gorky is the third largest city in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. It is located at the confluence of the Volga River and its right-bank tributary, the Volga River. It is the capital of Gorky Oblast. The urban area straddles the banks of the Volga River. This is the hometown of Gorky, the Gorky Memorial Hall, and many museums and universities, among which the Nizhny Novgorod State University is the most famous. It is also the most prestigious automobile city in the Soviet Union. The Gorky Automobile Factory is located in this city, and many famous Soviet automobile products, such as Volga, GAZ, and Seagull automobiles, were born here.

After Seryozha and Papa Petrov arrived in Gorky in the stolen GAZ 69, they could no longer move forward. The reason is simple, they have no money. After the excitement of a successful jailbreak has passed, the first question is not how not to get caught again, but how to survive.

Seryozha checked all their property now. There were only some insulin stolen from the hospital and nitroglycerin for heart disease, nothing more, and they only had thirty rubles on them.

"We need some money?" Seryozha said to Father Petrov.

"What's going on? To steal? To rob? In this way, we don't have to go to Siberia, and we will be arrested again in a few days." Father Petrov said.

"We can sell these medicines. We have to find a black market first. The hospital won't take things from unknown sources." Seryozha suggested.

"That's a good way. How to find it?" Petrov's father asked again.

"I don't know either, let's go around the city." After finishing speaking, Seryozha drove into Gorky City.

. . .

1980 was the 16th year since Brezhnev took office as General Secretary. The Soviet Union was aggressive internationally. Not only did it surpass the United States in the number of nuclear weapons, it also sent troops to Afghanistan to realize the dream of Peter the Great. Besides, the Olympic Games will be hosted this year. This is the first time that the Soviet Union has hosted the Olympic Games. It can be said that this year is the most proud year for a Soviet person.

Although a brighter path lies ahead, life must go on. Daily necessities, tobacco, wine, sugar and tea are all supplied by tickets. Without tickets, you can’t buy things even if you have money. As long as housewives see queues on the street, they basically don't ask what they sell, and just queue up first. But sometimes, such as weddings and funerals, how can I buy things without a ticket. Then you can only go to the black market. Although the price is a bit more expensive, you can finally buy it.

People in Gorky City are very enthusiastic. A kind aunt just pointed out the way for a young man who was going to visit his girlfriend's house but couldn't buy vodka. That particular market is in a small alley in the car factory area. Surrounded by workers' residences, the place is not easy to find, and it is only open at night.

That GAZ 69 was too big in the urban area. Sergei parked the car in the parking lot of the workers’ living quarters. There are some vacant dormitories in the living quarters for rent. The rent is cheap, and the rent of more than ten rubles a month is not a small fortune for a worker who earns more than 300 rubles a month. Seryozha easily found a place to live, but half of the money in his hand was lost.

Neither Seryozha nor Papa Petrov had dinner, and they were all waiting for the night to try their luck on the black market with insulin and nitroglycerin.

As night came, people squeezed into the free market in the Gorky Automobile Factory area in twos and threes. There are several interconnected alleys here, so doing business here is not easy to be caught by the police. Seryozha and Papa Petrov parted ways at a fork in the road, each heading in the same direction.

There are many commodities on the market, and many of them cannot be bought in state-run stores, such as Cuban cigars, French perfumes, Swiss watches and sabers, and some Japanese gadgets, of course, the prices are astonishingly high. There are also some foods sold here, such as smoked fish, bacon and so on. In short, as long as you have money, you can buy everything you want here,

Including guns, it's just that no one is selling them.

Seryozha took out a box of insulin and a box of nitroglycerin from his school bag. When I saw someone coming over, I showed it to others. I thought that no one would buy it, but I didn't expect the business to be surprisingly good.

"How much is insulin?" asked a middle-aged, intellectual-looking man with glasses.

"Six rubles a box," Seryozha said casually.

"Can it be cheaper, my wife needs it every day?" the middle-aged man begged.

"That's five rubles, nothing less," Seryozha replied.

"Give me twenty boxes." The middle-aged man seemed very satisfied with the price.

"Why don't you go to the hospital to buy it?" Seryozha asked curiously.

"My wife is a housewife. Except for cadres, ordinary people have no way to reimburse this kind of medicine for treating chronic diseases." The middle-aged man replied helplessly.

. . .

Hundreds of boxes of insulin were quickly sold out, and only a few boxes of nitroglycerin were left, which were finally packaged and sold to the last customer by Serezha. With nearly 2,000 rubles in his hands, he was making a fortune. In one night, he earned the equivalent of half a year's income for a worker. Seryozha really didn't expect it. He hastily collected the money and went back the same way to find Papa Petrov.

Father Petrov's face was triumphant, and Seryozha knew what he was going to say, so he played a trick, telling him to be careful, and don't be too happy to make people stare at him. The two left the market as quickly as possible.

Don't panic when you have money in your hands, the two of them simply ate something and then rested. Sergey Sha was a little excited about the business in the black market at night, and worried about the jailbreak. The two feelings were mixed, Sergey Sha I couldn't fall asleep until dawn.

Early the next morning Seryozha went out, bought some coffee, eggs, butter, bacon, and found the nearest newspaper. Papa Petrov was in charge of cooking breakfast, and Seryozha was sitting by the side, flipping through the newspaper. The prison escape was not mentioned above, but only mentioned that an explosion occurred in a factory that produced fireworks for the Olympics, the leaders cared for them, and the victims were emotionally stable. What surprised Seryosha was that such a serious incident happened, why it was not mentioned in the newspaper, but after thinking about it, he was relieved, probably because the KGB had too many secrets that could not be revealed.

. . .

Leningrad, in the KGB Leningrad Intelligence Building, the clock has already struck eleven o'clock at night, a desk lamp in the corner at the end of the corridor is still bright, a young man with a blond hair is still busy, this name is Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin's youth has been working here for four years after graduating from the Leningrad Law Faculty, but this is the first time he has taken on such a big case. A week ago, the escape from the Lubyanka Prison in Moscow caused huge waves within the KGB. Although the incident was suppressed by the people above, it did not cause any big waves in the country, but the prisoners who escaped from the Lubyanka Prison Among them were Chechen separatists, people who violently resisted the Soviet regime, and traitors who were bought by hostile countries. There are also some people who stand in the way of the KGB. As a world-renowned intelligence agency, the KGB is a powerful force. In order to protect its own interests, it is natural to deal with these people. So many fugitives were beyond the reach of the KGB in Moscow, so some information about the fugitives was assigned to the Leningrad branch.

After reading the photos of the burnt-through gate of the confinement room of Lubyanka Prison and the analysis report of the experts on the cause of the explosion, Putin admired this college student named Sergei Ivanovich Ulyanov, the special case As a result, he was nicknamed "Lubyanka Silver Fox".

"Silver fox, where are you?"
